Department of ASEAN Affairs Supports Efforts to Advance Cooperation to Tackle Transboundary Haze Pollution in ASEAN

On 10 July 2026, Ms. Suchada Maktara, Deputy Director-General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, gave a special lecture on, “Thailand and its Cooperation to Tackle Transboundary Haze Pollution in ASEAN and in the Mekong Subregion,” at the Seminar on Cooperation in Driving Parallel Border Cities Reducing Transboundary Haze Pollution.The seminar was organised by the Thailand Environment Institute (TEI) at TK Palace Hotel & Convention, Bangkok. Over 50 participants from the public sector, civil society, and academia attended the seminar.
DDG Suchada reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment and highlighted Thailand’s proactive role in advancing regional cooperation to address transboundary haze pollution in ASEAN and the Mekong Sub-region, particularly under the ‘CLEAR Sky Strategy’ between Thailand, the Lao PDR, and Myanmar. She also reaffirmed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to address transboundary haze pollution in the region.
Mr. Teeraphong Wimonjittranon, Deputy Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, emphasised Thailand’s efforts to promote more concrete cooperation to tackle transboundary haze pollution at all levels, including through enhanced cooperation under the CLEAR Sky Strategy. These include the establishment of the ‘Hotline’ communication mechanism, the setting up of joint ‘situation rooms’ in border areas between Thailand, the Lao PDR and Myanmar, and the provision of equipment and technical support for transboundary haze management for neighbouring countries.
In addition, Ms. Bounmany Soulideth, Deputy Director of the Pollution Control Division, Department of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of the Lao PDR, and Ms. Thaw Thaw Han, Director of Environmental Conservation Department of Myanmar, shared their perspectives on advancing cross-border cooperation to address transboundary haze pollution.
The seminar was organised by (TEI), aimed at providing a platform for government agencies and academia to exchange views and strengthen collaboration in advancing efforts to address transboundary haze pollution.
