From 15–17 December 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, in cooperation with the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD), organised activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), also known as the Bangkok Treaty.
On 15 December 2025, the programme featured an award ceremony, presided over by H.E. Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, for ASEAN youth winners of the art competition held in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Bangkok Treaty, an exhibition of the winning artworks, symbolic activities, and an academic panel discussion on “ASEAN and the Bangkok Treaty: A Regional Anchor for Peace”, led by Mrs. Chatvadee Chindawongse, Deputy Director-General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, and Mr. Azril Abd Aziz, Deputy Director-General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs of Malaysia, at Vithes Samosorn, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the afternoon, the youth delegation visited the IAEA Rays of Hope Anchor Centre at the Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, where they attended a briefing on “Radiation Usages in Medicine” and toured the medical facilities.
On 16–17 December 2025, the youth delegation undertook study visits and attended briefings at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), explored the Ong Ang Walking Street area to learn about urban development initiatives presented by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and participated in a workshop on storytelling through art for peace and disarmament advocacy. Cultural activities included visits Wat Pho and Wat Traimit Withayaram.
As the depositary State of the Bangkok Treaty, Thailand’s co-hosting of the youth activities reflects its leadership role and creative commitment to maintaining Southeast Asia as a nuclear-weapon-free region, while promoting the significance of the Bangkok Treaty through youth engagement. By providing opportunities for active participation, the programme underscored the vital role of young people as creators, agenda-setters, and guarantors of a future free from nuclear weapons.
